LIONEL HAMPTON - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 04/14/1983
LIONEL HAMPTON. TLS: "Lionel Hampton," 1p, 8½x11. New York, 1983 April 14. To Master Lionel Reynard, San Francisco. In full: "It is a pleasure to hear from someone who has so much in common with me. Our name is not as unusual as you think after all as William Shakespeare once said, 'What's in a name'. There are some other Lionel's that should be familiar to you in future times, such as Lionel Barrymore, Lionel Richie and of course, Lionel Trains which has been going around the tracks longer than both you and I. My close friends call me Gates, as I was nicknamed by Benny Goodman who said one that I swung musically like a Swingin' Gate! Tell your teacher hello for me, and tell the kids at school don't make jokes about your name, because one day they may find themselves writing you a letter telling you, 'You are the Greatest, Lionel'." Good content letters of the great jazz xylophonist are scarce. Fine condition.
