OLIVER ELLSWORTH
Oliver Ellsworth signs an autograph document.
Autograph Document Signed: "O. Ellsworth", 1p, 7½x3¾. No place (Connecticut), 1775 December 11. Also signed: "Ez. Williams" and "T. Seymour" as members of the Committee. To John Lawrence, Treasurer. In full: "Pay Elisha Gardiner, by hand pf James FitzGerrald, for dieting & tending of sd Gerrald a Sick Soldier pf the Connecticut Troops - at a Distance from the Camp as pr Acct. Twenty Shillings, in Bill, & charge the Colony." Related notes on verso, including endorsement: "James Fitzgerrald". OLIVER ELLSWORTH, a member of the Continental Congress (1777-1784) and one of Connecticut's first two U.S. Senators (1789-1796), was appointed by President Washington as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 1796, serving until 1799. An attorney who had moved to Hartford in 1775, Ellsworth served on the Pay-Table, the Connecticut Committee of Four that handled all of the military finances for the colony of Connecticut during the American Revolution. The Pay-Table's members were rotated. The signatures of three of the four members of the Pay-Table were required for an order to pay. Colonel THOMAS SEYMOUR (1735-1829) was the first Mayor of Hartford, Connecticut. Stray ink blots. Light show through of docket on verso. Overall, fine condition.
