ANSEL ADAMS - ANNOTATED TYPED LETTER SIGNED 01/07/1959
ANSEL ADAMS
Ansel Adams sends a MEMO in 1959 regarding New Year's cards, the weather and a claim for damages against the post office.
Typed Document signed: "Ansel", Faces drawn around the filing holes at left margin, ink circles around "Nicholas Dean and Family!!" and around "AA" 1p. 8½x11, MEMO: No place, 1959 January 7. To: Nicholas Dean and Family! From: AA In Part, with original spelling and grammar: "No, I have not forgotten you!..The new 4x5 working beautifully!!!!! We are having our first storms - badly needed. Hope you can keep up creative work! Have been unable to make adequate contact with the Boston Arts Festival People regarding the Insurance on the damaged prints. There was some confusion os to what should be done. The Post office wants them to initiate the claim. The damage came to about $200.00 and I should really be getting it settles with the photographers! All our BEST to you and all- - - - - as ever" For over ten years, ANSEL ADAMS (1902-1984), who is known for his photographs featuring America's natural beauty, was the publicity photographer for the Curry Company, which operates seven hotels in Yosemite National Park. In 1955, Adams initiated yearly photographic educational workshops at Yosemite that continued for 26 years (1955-1981). He moved the workshops to his home in Carmel in 1982, and they continue yearly as an Ansel Adams legacy by The Friends of Photography. At Yosemite, where Adams captured nature on film for over 60 years, he lectured on wilderness conservation and appreciation, as well as visualization in the art of photography. Much of Adams' professional photographic life was spent at Yosemite, where the Ansel Adams Gallery, formerly Best's Studio, is located (a different photographic exhibit is featured each month). Adams published approximately 40 books, including My Camera in National Parks (1950) and Yosemite and the Range of Light (1979). An ardent conservationist, he was a director of the Sierra Club from 1936-1973. He and his wife, Virginia, also had another, more intimate reason for their fondness for Yosemite; they were married there on January 2, 1928. NICHOLAS DEAN of Cambridge, Massachusetts, worked for Polaroid and was a photographer himself. Adams, who had become a consultant for the newly formed Polaroid Company in 1949, frequently corresponded with Dean. 2 horizontal fold creases. Lightly solid and creased at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
