METROPOLITAN OPERA: LICIA ALBANESE, EZIO PINZA, SALVATORE BACCALONI, ETTORE PANIZZA, EDWARD JOHNSON, WILFRED ENGLEMAN, LEONARD WARREN, BIDU SAYAO and NORMAN CORDON. Program signed on various pages: "Ezio Pinza", "Licia Albanese", "Salvatore Baccaloni", "Ettore Panizza", "Edward Johnson", "Wilfred Engleman", "Leonard Warren", "Bidu Sayao", "Norman Cordon" and one unidentified signature. Ten signatures in all. 12 p, 4x8¾. Program for a series of performances in Cleveland, Ohio, by the Metropolitan Opera of New York, 1941 April 14-19. PINZA (1892-1957), an Italian basso who performed 850 times with the Met in 51 roles before "retiring" to Broadway musicals like South Pacific, here sang the title role in The Marriage of Figaro and also Mephistopheles in Faust. ALBANESE (b. 1913), an Italian soprano who specialized in the works of Puccini, especially Madam Butterfly, was associated with the Met from her 1940 debut until 1966. She remained in New York, teaching at the Julliard School and elsewhere, and was honored with the Handel Medallion (2000) for her contribution to the cultural life of New York City. BACCALONI (1889-1969), who appeared here in The Marriage of Figaro and The Barber of Seville, also starred in Italian films, with Hollywood appearances in the early 1960s (Fanny, The Pigeon That Took Rome). PANIZZA, a world renowned conductor, wielded the baton for Figaro and Rigoletto. JOHNSON (1878-1959), who joined the Met as a tenor in 1921, later served as General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera Association (1935-1949), and is credited with doing much to secure its finances. ENGLEMAN, a baritone who died in 1978, is featured here in The Barber of Seville and Rigoletto. WARREN (1911-1960) was in the chorus of Radio City Music Hall when, totally unschooled in opera, he won a Met contract via radio's Auditions of the Air (1938). On this program he performed in Cavalleria Rusticana. SAYAO (1902-1999), who embarked on a singing career over the strong objections of her Brazilian family, debuted with the Met in 1937. Here the soprano performed in The Marriage of Figaro and The Barber of Seville. CORDON, another bass, was heard here in Barber and Rigoletto. Some stray ink marks. Overall, fine condition.
