All five sign a Los Angeles theater program.
Program signed: "Constance Bennett", "Joan Bennett", "Greetings!/Billie Dove", "J Barrymore" and "Mary Pickford", 1 page, 5½x11. Los Angeles, no year December 21. Program for the opening performance of The Last of Mrs. Cheyney, a comedy in three acts by Frederick Lonsdale, at the El Capital Theatre. The play starred Bebe Daniels, who had appeared with Barrymore in the 1933 film, Counsellor at Law. MARY PICKFORD (1892-1979) appeared in 51 films for D.W. Griffith in 1909 and 49 in 1910 while she was still a teenager! The most popular star of the silent era, she co-founded United Artists in 1919 with Charles Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks (1883-1939) and D.W. Griffith. In 1920, Pickford and Fairbanks, who were known as "Hollywood's King and Queen of the Silents", were married; they separated in 1933 and divorced in 1936. JOHN BARRYMORE (1882-1942) debuted on Broadway in 1903 and in films in 1914. With talkies, Barrymore's days as a romantic lead had passed but his exquisite voice and superb bearing guaranteed him stronger film roles than he had in the silents. His heavy drinking caused him to degenerate into a man old before his time. He was 60 when he died of pneumonia and cirrhosis of the liver. JOAN BENNETT (1910-1990), the daughter of stage actor Richard Bennett and sister of screen actresses Constance and Barbara Bennett, starred in over 40 films, including Bulldog Drummond (1929), Little Women (1933), Father of the Bride (1950) and We're No Angels (1955). Active on the stage in the 1960s, she also starred in the TV series Dark Shadows (1966-1971) and appeared in a number of made-for-television movies. CONSTANCE BENNETT (1905-1965) appeared in silent movies of the 1920s, then returned to movies in the 1930s in "fallen woman" and light comedy roles. Her films included Topper (1937) and Paris Underground (1945, which she also produced). One of the best known of the Ziegfeld girls, BILLIE DOVE (1901-1997), born Lillian Bohney, made her film debut in 1921's Get Rich Quick Wallingford. She would make over 40 films before retiring from the screen in 1932, including The Black Pirate (1927) and American Beauty (1927), the name by which she was called during the apex of her stage and screen career. Creased with folds, mid-vertical fold at the "rr" of Barrymore. 2¼-inch tear at upper margin at mid-vertical fold, ¼x¼-inch paper loss at lower blank margin, Nailhead-sized hole at mid cross folds. Chipped at blank left edge, irregular upper edge. Lightly soiled. Fragile condition.
