MAURICE EVANS, RICHARD GREENE, CLAIRE LUCE, RALPH CLANTON, MARGARET WEBSTER and BEN TILLETT
Maurice Evans, Richard Greene, Claire Luce, Ralph Clanton, Margaret Webster and Ben Tillett sign a piece of paper.
Signatures: "Just a good luck/to you./Ben Tillett./17-10-19.", "[flower over the "i"]/Claire Luce", "Margaret Webster", "Ralph Clanton/April 25th 1951", "Richard Greene" and "Maurice Evans" and, on verso, "Herbert A. Olivier", 1p, 7x8. On verso, there is a 2x5¾ drawing of two men and three notes in pencil (all in unknown hand). British stage actor MAURICE EVANS (1901-1989) made his American debut on Broadway, becoming well known for his interpretations of such classic Shakespearean characters as Romeo, Hamlet, Macbeth and Richard II, among others. Evans, who brought Shakespeare to television, received an Emmy Award in 1960 for Macbeth. Although he made several feature films, including The Story of Gilbert and Sullivan (1953), The War Lord (1965) and Rosemary's Baby (1968) and played Dr. Zaius in two Planet of the Ape films, Evans is perhaps best known for his role as Elizabeth Montgomery's warlock father, Maurice, on Bewitched (1964-1972). He also appeared in a number of made-for-TV movies and guested on several TV series. Dashing British leading man RICHARD GREENE (1918-1985) starred in films from 1938, including Kentucky (1938), Don't Take it to Heart (1944) and Lorna Doone (1951). He played the title role in the long-running British TV series, The Adventures of Robin Hood (1955-1960). Actress CLAIRE LUCE (1903-1989) appeared in several feature films in the 1930s and teamed up with Fred Astaire for The Gay Divorce on Broadway (1932). Later in her career, she became a "serious" stage actress, becoming the first American actress to appear at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Britain. Actor RALPH CLANTON (born in 1914) has appeared in several feature films, including The Vagabond King (1956), Johnny Tremain (1957) and The Absent-Minded Professor (1961) and made-for-TV movies. He has also appeared on several "soaps", including Somerset (1970-1971), Another World (1970) and Search For Tomorrow (1971-1972, 1973), and guest starred on several TV series, including multiple episodes of Perry Mason and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. American stage actress and director MARGARET WEBSTER (1905-1972) is best known for her Shakespearean productions. British labor leader BEN TILLETT (1860-1943), one of the leaders of the 1889 London Dock Strike, later co-founded the trade paper, "Daily Herald", and served in Britain's House of Commons from 1817-1931. Slightly soiled, shaded at margins. Irregular right edge from removal from bound book. Page numbers stamped at upper left margin of front and upper right margin on verso. Rounded right corners. Overall, fine condition.
