JUDY GARLAND, JOHN PAYNE and JOHN HODIAK
Judy Garland, John Payne, and John Hodiak sign a matchbook cover.
Matchbook Cover signed: "Judy/Garland", "John/Payne" and "John Hodiak" on inside, 3¾x1½ when opened. Matchbook from the Trocadero night club in Hollywood. Signers' names printed (unknown hand) in ink at margins. JUDY GARLAND (1922-1969) sang on stage with her sisters in the late 1920s and appeared on records and films from 1936, but her breakthrough to superstardom came with her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939), singing her signature song, "Over the Rainbow". A competent actress and superbly gifted singer, Garland won an Oscar, two Grammys, and multiple Oscar, Grammy and Emmy nominations during her legendary career. By the late 1940s, her film career was suffering as a result of personal problems, including struggles with alcohol and the barbiturates that finally killed her, but she made a dazzling comeback in concert tours of the 1960s, especially Judy at Carnegie Hall (1961). Garland is the mother of actress Liza Minnelli and screenwriter/producer Lorna Luft. JOHN PAYNE (1912-1989), who began his career as a singer, came to Hollywood in 1935. By the 1940s, he was appearing in musicals, including Sun Valley Serenade (1941), and played lead roles in such films as The Razor's Edge (1946) and Miracle on 34th Street (1947). Very popular with female fans (Payne was a top male pin-up for some time), Payne turned to Westerns and action films in the 1950s. From 1957-1959, he starred as Vint Bonner and was the narrator of the TV series, Restless Gun. Payne later hosted the "Call to the West" version of Death Valley Days (1972) and appeared on Broadway in a revival of Good News (1973). His three wives include two actresses: Anne Shirley (1937-1943) and Gloria DeHaven (1944-1950). JOHN HODIAK (1914-1915), who started his career on radio, appeared in such films as Lifeboat (1944), A Bell for Adano (1945), Somewhere in the Night (1946) and Battleground (1949) after signing an MGM contract in 1942. Hodiak, who originated the role of Lieutenant Maryk in The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial on Broadway (1954), also appeared on Broadway in The Chase (1952) and was a guest star on several TV shows. He was married to actress Anne Baxter from 1946-1953. Diagonal crease touches the "Pa" of Payne and nicks the flourish of the "d" in Garland. Lightly soiled. Mounting glue on verso and paper loss at there and middle of lower edge (no show through). Overall, fine condition.
