HOWARD THURSTON. ALS: "Devotedly your Howard", 1p, 6x9¾, front and verso. Altoona, Pa., 1917 May 18, Friday. On letterhead of the Hotel LeRoy to his wife, Grace. Begins: "Sweetheart". In full: "Only nine more days. I shall be so happy to get home. I know you will have it in perfect order. What will the floors cost? Am so glad Dr. Clairbone is helping your head. Hope he also helps Jane and Emma. Letters today from Worthington Surgery Jane's Eye Doctor Dr. Rowe died suddenly. I am so pleased with Jane's success in music. Enclosed are three checks [not present]. Please have Reynolds measure & see if the car will enter garage with wing shield. Have him prove it no guess. Business good. Expect to get the 1700 here making 4000 on the week. I can hardly wait until I see you -- Love and kisses to the best wife in all the world." He has penned at upper margin on verso: "Saw the Lyndons today for only a few minutes/Mr. & Mrs.". THURSTON, one of the most famous magicians in the U.S. for more than three decades, was known for his grand illusions, including making a Whippet automobile filled with beautiful girls disappear. Wildly popular both in the U.S. and abroad, he had met his wife, GRACE, a war widow, and her daughter, JANE, while on tour with his show in Ottawa, Canada. He proposed to her within a week and was devoted to her and his family, despite his busy performance schedule. Jane later assisted in his shows and was pictured on the cards that Thurston used to "scale" into the audience during his performances. Jane also co-wrote a book on magic with her father, while Grace later wrote a biography, My Magic Husband Thurston the Great. Lightly creased, diagonal crease touches the "d" of Howard. Heavily penned, show through of writing (all legible). Overall, fine condition.
