AUGUSTUS SAINT-GAUDENS
His signature from 1905, signed on verso in the same year by Ambassador Joseph Choate and General Horace Porter
Signature: "Augustis Saint-Gaudens/April 26th 1905," 1p, 8¾x3¼. On a page removed from an autograph collector's booklet upon which an early 20th century ten-cent Louisiana Purchase stamp has been affixed to the right of the signature. Irish-born Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) was the foremost American sculptor of the late 19th century. In addition to his statues of Lincoln in Chicago, Farragut in New York City, and Robert Gould Shaw's African-American regiment in Boston, he was commissioned by President Roosevelt to design the $10 and $20 US gold pieces. On verso are the signatures of "Joseph H. Choate/19 June 1905" and "Horace Porter/July 21 1905" with an early five-cent McKinley stamp affixed at the right. Joseph H. Choate (1832-1917) prosecuted the Tweed Ring and served as U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain (1899-1905). General Horace Porter (1837-1921) was aide-de-camp to General Grant and was with him at the surrender of Lee at Appomattox. He wrote a lively memoir about his Civil War campaigns. Signatures are not back to back. Stain and tiny holes in center, see through from stamp(s) on respective versos, else fine.
