MAJOR GENERAL WILLIAM S. "OLD ROSY" ROSECRANS - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 10/11/1887 - DOCUMENT 22210

GENERAL WILLIAM S. "OLD ROSY" ROSECRANS
William Starke Rosecrans wrote this letter in 1887. In it, he write that the recipient would be "the only Western Union Telegraph Co. employee after Mr. Bok who is to represent that gallant and esteemed body in asking for notes" about Rosecrans.
Autograph letter signed "W.S. Rosecrans/Bvt Maj Genl USA", 1p, 5x7. San Francisco, California, 1887 October 11. On lined paper to Edgar G. Gladwin, Brooklyn, N.Y. In full: "Responding to your request of the 4th Inst I must beg that you shall be considered the only Western Union Telegraph Co. employee after Mr. Bok who is to represent that gallant and esteemed body in asking for notes from yours truly." William S. "Old Rosy" Rosecrans (1819-1898) graduated West Point in 1842 and entered the Army Corps of Engineers. He left the Army in 1854 and worked as a civil engineer and architect, but volunteered for duty when the Civil War broke out. Rosecrans was commissioned a Brigadier General in June 1861 and became Commander for Western Virginia. His first victory, at Rich Mountain in July 1861, helped create the state of West Virginia. Rosecrans' skills in fortifications, troop movement and supply lines led to success in 1862, but in September 1863 he met defeat at Chickamauga. Rosecrans, popular with troops and fondly called "Old Rosy", was relieved of command after Chickamauga, and he resigned from the Army in March 1867. His engineering expertise led to a post as Minister to Mexico. Rosecrans later served as U.S. Congressman from California (1881-1885) and Registrar of the U.S. Treasury (1885-1893). Mr. Bok is likely EDWARD BOK (1863-1930), a prominent editor (The Ladies Home Journal), journalist and social reformer. As a young man, Bok began assembling a large autograph collection by writing to prominent people of the day. Lightly creased. Folds, horizontal fold underlines signature. Fine condition.
