made...between Nathan Mayer Rothschild of New Court Esq. of the first part;
Edward Samuel Walker of Mansion house of the second part; and John Irving, of
Broad Street Buildings, in the City of London, Esq.' Francis Baring, of
Bishopsgate Street, in the said City of London, Esq.; and Nathan Meyer
Rothschild [Mayer spelled incorrectly in type], of New Court, St.
Swithin's Lane, in the said City of London, Esq. Three of the Presidents of the
Alliance British and Foreign Life and Fire Assurance Company, of the third part.
Whereas the said Edward Samuel Walker has become the Purchaser; with the
approbation of the Board of Direction of the said Company, of One hundred Shares
in the Capital of the said Company; on each of which Shared the Sum of Ninety
Pounds still remains unpaid; Now this Indenture witnesseth, That in
Consideration of the Sum of One thousand nine hundred pounds at or before the
sealing and delivery of these Presents, paid by the said Edward Samuel Walker to
the said Nathan Mayer Rothschild...doth release and for ever discharge the said
Edward Samuel Walker his Heirs, Executors, Administrators, and Assigns; the said
Nathan Mayer Rothschild hath bargained, sold, and assigned...unto the said
Edward Samuel Walker his Executors, Administrators, and Assigns, all those the
said Shares of his the said Nathan Mayer Rothschild in the Capital of the
Alliance British and Foreign Life and Fire Assurance Company, and all Benefits,
Advantages, Powers, and Privileges attending the same...." Also
signed: "Edward Saml Walker" and witnessed by: "Francis
Parole". Walker has purchased from Rothschild 100
shares of the Alliance British and Foreign Life and Fire Assurance Company for
£1,900. Nathan's father Mayer had founded a money-lending business in
Frankfurt and was the agent of the British government in subsidizing European
sovereigns during the Napoléonic Wars. NATHAN MAYER ROTHSCHILD
founded a branch at London; other sons founded branches in Vienna, Naples and
Paris. Nathan's son Lionel was elected to Parliament but was not allowed to take
his seat because he was Jewish. Lionel's son, Sir Nathan Mayer Rothschild, 1st
Baron Rothschild, was the first Jew admitted to the House of Lords. His son, 2nd
Baron Rothschild, received the Balfour Declaration in 1917. Documents bearing
the signature of Nathan Mayer Rothschild are extremely desirable. Browned at
right margin with pinhead-size file holes. Lightly soiled. Overall, fine
condition.
