GEORGE WEEDON. ALS: "G Weedon BG" as Brigadier General, 1p, 8x13. Williamsburg, 1781 March 31. To British General John Philips. In full: "Lieut Colo Thomas Mathews will have the honor of delivering you this, he & a Mr. Marsden goes with a Flag to Portsmouth, for the purpose of removing the Colos [Colonel's] Family, and that of the late Maximilian Calverts from without the British lines. I take the Liberty of Introducing them to your Civilities and am with high Esteem and Regd". Noted on verso (unknown hand): "Copy Genl/Philips". THE MONTH THIS LETTER WAS WRITTEN, BRITISH GENERAL JOHN PHILIPS HAD ADVANCED TO VIRGINIA TO REMOVE COMMAND FROM BENEDICT ARNOLD WHO, BY THAT TIME, WAS ESTABLISHED AS A TRAITOR TO THE AMERICANS. Philips had previously fought at Saratoga and was exchanged for Benjamin Lincoln (1780). He plundered Virginia's countryside (necessitating this request for safe passage) before dying of typhoid fever in May 1781, less than two months later. GEORGE WEEDON had served in Virginia regiments in the New York and New Jersey campaigns before being promoted to Brigadier General. He then served at Brandywine and Germantown, but resigned over a perceived slight regarding his rank. Congress never officially accepted his resignation, and Weedon returned to service when the British invaded Virginia in 1781, commanding the Virginia Militia during the siege of Yorktown. Folds, vertical fold touches "W" in "Weedon". Irregular left edge, with chipping. Overall, fine condition.
