GEORGE CUKOR. TLS: "George Cukor", 1p, 8½x11. No place, 1943 August 24. To Mr. E. J. Mannix, M.G.M. Studios, Culver City, California. Begins: "Dear Eddie". In full: "This is the Twenty-fifth Anniversary of the founding of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Hitherto its sponsorship has been limited to a few wealthy people whose contributions have sustained it from year to year, but present day conditions are rapidly making this kind of sponsorship impossible. Therefore, we are endeavoring to interest the community as a whole in the problems of the Symphony Association, in the hope that it can be maintained on a more practical and permanent basis. In recent years I believe the orchestra has proven itself to be a civic asset. Aside from its regular series of concerts in Los Angeles and other Southern California cities throughout the winter, it has provided a summer season in the Hollywood Bowl, played concerts for thousands of children of elementary and high school ages at ten cents admission, and given free concerts to soldiers and sailors in camps and hospitals, as well as reaching millions of music lovers over the radio. Mr. Alfred Wallenstein has been selected to start this fall as the permanent conductor for the orchestra. This young American has already made a brilliant place for himself in our musical life and is awaited with enthusiasm by everyone. In order to retain Mr. Wallenstein and increase the service and prestige of the orchestra, I am taking the liberty of urging you to make a personal contribution. You will find a blank enclosed with all the necessary information. Please fill it out for whatever amount you can spare for this purpose and mail it to me at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studio, Culver City, California. As one last inducement, let me add that these contributions are deductible for income tax purposes. Faithfully." The year after this letter, Cukor directed Winged Victory, I'll Be Seeing You and Gaslight. GEORGE DEWEY CUKOR (1899-1983), who began his career as a stage director before directing Hollywood films for half a century, won the Best Director Academy Award in 1960 for My Fair Lady and was nominated for Best Director Oscars for Little Women (1932-1933), The Philadelphia Story (1940), A Double Life (1947) and Born Yesterday (1950). Cukor, who was known for getting the best out of his actors, directed Katharine Hepburn's first film, A Bill of Divorcement (1932), as well as such films as Dinner at Eight (1933), David Copperfield (1935), Romeo and Juliet (1936), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), Adam's Rib (1949), Pat and Mike (1952), Heller in Pink Tights (1960) and A Star is Born (1954). The director reunited with Hepburn for his two made-for-TV films, Love Among the Ruins (1975) and The Corn is Green (1978). ALFRED WALLENSTEIN (1898-1983) was Music Director and conducted the Los Angles Philharmonic Orchestra from 1943-1956. Under his direction, the Orchestra doubled its number of yearly concerts, and Wallenstein inaugurated radio broadcasts on the NBC and Pacific networks, created the "Symphonies for Youth" series, made a number of recordings and took the Orchestra on the road, including a 10-week tour of the Orient under the auspices of the State Department. He also established a pension fund for his musicians. A former principal cellist with both the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic and the Music Director of WOR radio (1935-1945), Wallenstein had been encouraged to take up conducting by Arturo Toscanini. Wallenstein was the first American conductor to be awarded the French Legion of Honor. EDGAR JOSEPH "EDDIE" MANNIX (1891-1963) was an executive with the M-G-M Studios and later Vice President of Loew's Theatres, Inc. - and a reputed gangster. There is a theory that actor George Reeves, who played the "Man of Steel" on TV's The Adventures of Superman, was murdered by hit men hired by Mannix. Reeves and Toni Mannix, Eddie's common law wife, had been having an affair since 1950. Reeves had appeared in Cukor's 1944 film, Winged Victory, and was in the cast of Gone With the Wind (1939), from which Cukor had been removed at the insistence of Clark Gable. Lightly creased, touching the "r" of Cukor. Slightly soiled at blank areas. Fine condition.
