SIGNED LITHOGRAPH OF THE FIRST ART CREATED FOR THE UNITED NATIONS BY THE ITALIAN ACTRESS

SOPHIA LOREN.
Printed Art signed: "Sophia/Loren". Color, 8½x11. Numbered in pencil: "432/1000". Imprinted on verso: "From a painting entitled 'Hope' by Miss Sophia Loren". Two tape remnants on verso (no show through). Fine condition. Accompanied by printed DS: "Annabelle Wiener" for the World Federation of United Nations Associations, 1p, 8½x11. United Nations, New York City, 1982 September 1. Headed: "Print Documentation". The sheet provides information on the purpose of the lithograph, which accompanied the United Nations stamp issue, "1982 Flag Series", issued on September 24, 1982. In addition to providing lithograph number, size, paper and edition size, the sheet also provides the following authentication: "EACH LITHOGRAPH IS HAND SIGNED BY MISS LOREN/Each lithograph bears the embossed seals of both the Federation and Seaboard Lithographers in New York where this lithograph was prepared. Both seals appear in the lower right margin." The sheet also lists the contributions of Italian-born actress SOPHIA LOREN to this United Nations project and to films. In part: "Miss Loren not only marks her debut in the field of United Nations philately with the contribution of her painting to WFUNA but she also brings to her countless fans another of her remarkable talents - that of artist and designer. In her painting for WFUNA which she has entitled 'HOPE,' Miss Loren shows the outstretched arms of both children and adults reaching from the depths of darkness for the light and hope of the sun...From a little girl who was called stuzzicadenti (toothpick) and later being one of 10,000 slave girl extras in 'Quo Vadia,' Sophia has risen to the top of her profession, an Oscar-winning artist (for 'Two Women') of the first rank...Miss Loren has made over seventy films...In the world of films, no one personifies the word 'star,' no actress embodies 'glamour,' 'womanliness,' and 'talent,' the way Sophia Loren does...." Fine condition. Two items.
