HASSO VON MANTEUFFEL. Typed Letter signed: "H. Manteuffel", 1 p, 8¼x10¾. On personal letterhead. Diessen am Ammersee (West Germany), 1973 June 28. To "My very dear friend". In full: [spelling and other errors in original.] "Many thanks for your fine letter May 5th and your friendly sympathy on my recovery! I am well, but I have temporarily gripes in my renal region and therefore cannot expect these gripes to you and others! Thanks too for the enclosures in your letter. We saw the landing of the Astronautes - SKYLAB - on our TV all very clear in all details! My conflict with Keitel in April 1945, concerning the defense of Berlin, is described in all details in John Toland's 'The Last 100 Days' pages 515/516: Keitel relieved Col. General Heinrici from his command as C-in-C Army Group Vistula in a very shame manner! I refused to accept either this command or the promotion (to Col. General) that went with it! On May 2nd I sent my chief of staff to the staff of F M Montgomery to offer the surrender of my army (300,000 men). M. refused in the first instance that, but he sent on the morning of May 3rd an officer of his staff to me to say that we have to go in captivity (to his army group) without weapons etc. We did so - in the best discipline and without anyone incident! After some days we crosses the Elbe river to West - no self-contained unit of my army came in Russian captivity! After some weeks at Lüneberg (south of Hamburg) I came into England in captivity! My warmest congratulations for your tremendous success of the visit of the Astrounautes at the Dunes Hotel etc. Now I have started my memoirs and on July 30th comes a historian from the States to discuss with me the form/type of the composition. I will work out that within the next months. Thanks too for your greetings to Mrs. v. M. She is very well, she celebrated her 70th birthday some weeks ago - in best health! In September we hope to fly to Jran for visiting my grandchild and our great-grandosn (now 4 years old) - our sunshine! Kindest regards and warmest remembrances in friendship yours." Manteuffel (1897-1978), descended from a Prussian military family, was a talented tank commander on the Eastern and Western fronts during World War II. He commanded the 5th Panzer Army during the ill-fated Ardennes offensive of January 1945. He later served in the West German Bundestag (1953-1957). Slightly creased. Vertical fold crosses signature. Fine condition.
