MUSHY (MORRIS SCHEER) CALLAHAN - INSCRIBED PHOTOGRAPH SIGNED
MUSHY CALLAHAN (MORRIS SCHEER). Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Roy/with Best Wishes/Mushy Callahan". B/w, 8x10. Ink note on verso (unknown hand): "Mushy Callahan -/Great Old Time Boxer/(3-20-68)". Born Morris Scheer in New York City but boxing as "Mushy Callahan - the Fighting Newsboy", Callahan (1904-1986) was a mediocre boxer but a brilliant self-promoter. After holding the Junior Welterweight title for four years (1926-1930) against weak opposition, he found a niche in Hollywood as a technical advisor for boxing films. Over forty years, he coached such stars as Elvis Presley for Kid Gallahad, Errol Flynn for Gentleman Jim, Montgomery Clift for From Here to Eternity and James Earl Jones for The Great White Hope. While off the Hollywood sets, Scheer/Callahan found time to run a haberdashery, serve as fitness trainer for celebrities (including Jane Wyman) and referee major prizefights involving boxers of the stature of Floyd Patterson, Archie Moore and Sugar Ray Robinson. No show through from ink note on verso. Fine condition.
