STAN LAUREL
Stan Laurel sends a typed letter to a friend offering condolences.
Typed Letter Signed: "Stan", 1p, 8½x11. Malibu, California, 1957 August 9. To John. In full: "Many thanks for your nice letter 8th. inst. I deeply appreciated your view point of my statement to your Dad, I guess you're right John in that sense, what I really meant, was the end of our active career, frankly I was so upset I was'nt [sic] paying any attention to what I said. Ben Shipman [Laurel's agent] called me the day before & told me Babe had taken a turn for the worse & the end was expected any hour, even knowing this, the final news came as a shock to me. However, I think it was a blessing John - poor fellow must have been really suffering (they discovered recently he had a bad cancer condition), so under the circumstances there was no hope of his ever recovering. What a tragic end to such a wonderful career. Eda joins in love & best to Jean & self, trust alls well & happy. Looking forward to seeing you real soon. Bye & God Bless. As ever:-" Both Laurel and Hardy had suffered from serious health problems in the mid-1950s. In 1955, the comedy duo had approached Hal Roach to do a series of TV shows based on Mother Goose rhymes. Before filming began, Laurel suffered a stroke. While he was recovering, Hardy suffered a massive heart attack and a stroke that left him paralyzed. Although Laurel continued to recover, Hardy did not. After lingering for several months, "Babe" Hardy died on August 7, 1957 following a series of strokes. Lightly shaded at margins, touching type but not signature. Overall, fine condition.
