ROBERT E. HANNEGAN
Robert E. Hannegan signed this letter, typed on embossed U. S. Postmaster General stationery, to his wife Irma Protzmann Hannegan in 1947, his last year as Postmaster General. Accompanied by an autograph note by Irma Hannegan on a small card and original mailing envelope.
Typed letter signed "Bob" in blue ink. 1 page, 7x8¾, on embossed U. S. Postmaster General stationery. June 9, 1947. Addressed to Mrs. Robert E. Hannegan, Washington, D. C. In full: "Dear Irma: Today the Post Office Department is honoring the Doctors of America through the issuance of a 3-cent postage stamp. The central design of the stamp is a repro-duction of the well-known painting 'The Doctor', by Sir Luke Fildes. It is with pleasure that I send you this letter through he Atlantic City, New Jersey, post office, where the initial sale of the new stamp is being conducted. Love,". Lightly toned and creased. Folded in half and unfolded. Fold is discolored on verso. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: 1) Autograph noted signed "Mrs Hannegan" in blue ink. 3½x2 card. In full: "This stamp issued by my husband during his Post-master Generalship has value if kept as attached to this personal note to me. I send it you since it was first issued in Atlantic City". Lightly toned. Signature is cut off at bottom edge. Pen skipped in places while writing note but not signature. Otherwise in fine condition. 2) Unsigned envelope from the U. S. Postmaster General's stationery. 7¼x4¾. Postmarked Atlantic City, June 9, 1947. Addressed to Mrs. Robert E. Hannegan, Washington, D. C. One 3-cent red-and-pink stamp reproduction of Sir Luke Fildes' painting The Doctor. Envelope is open and empty. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Adhesive residue has stained back of envelope (no show-through). Normal postal stamps. Otherwise in fine condition. 3) Envelope signed "Mrs P Hannegan" on flap in blue ink. Pencil notations near top edge in unknown hand. 9x5. Postmarked Saint Louis, Missouri, Jan 8, 1969. Addressed to Mr. Leonard Aronowitz, Atlantic City, New Jersey. Two 6-cent brown-and-white Franklin D. Roosevelt stamps affixed. Envelope is open and empty. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Show-through from paper loss on flap touches signature. Flap is torn at top and bottom. Tape residue at right and left edges. Random ink stains. Normal postal stamps. Otherwise in fine condition. "Irma" is probably IRMA PROTZMANN HANNEGAN (1904-1995), to whom Robert was married from 1929 until his death. ROBERT E. HANNEGAN (1903-1949) was Postmaster General of the United States (1945-1947). St. Louis Cardinals fans may also know him as their team's owner from 1947 to 1949. But his greatest contribution to history is probably his role as a power broker in the Democratic Party. He supported Harry S. Truman for re-election to Congress after the 1940 tax fraud conviction of Truman's sponsor Tom Pendergast. This support paid off big in 1944, when Truman recommended that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt make Hannegan chairman of the Democratic National Committee (1944-1947). As DNC chairman, Hannegan wrangled Truman onto the 1944 ticket as Roosevelt's vice-president.
