CHARLES DANA GIBSON
Charles Dana Gibson sends an autograph letter to his caretaker at his summer home in Dark Harbor, Maine about some items needing addressing at the home.
Autograph Letter Signed: "C.D. Gibson", 2p, 8¼x10¾. No place, 1944 March 8. On his personal letterhead to "My Dear Helen and John" [McLeod, caretakers of the Gibson summer home in Dark Harbor, Maine]. In full: "I have asked the Gulf Oil people to call up concerning the leaking tank and lost gas. And asking them if they can replace same so you may be hearing from them. I sent them a check for the last lot. So they may be in the mood to do the right thing. If they don't we will have to go to some other company. I also asked the oil people to send the receipted oil directly to you so that after a while (I think it when the gas is about used up) you can send the bill and one of those rebate cards in and get a rebate. Mrs Gibson said she sent you a short letter today but failed to say anything about the hens and eggs. I think we had better leave the whole thing for you to handle. But it's safe to say it will be a quiet summer and no need for the usual number. In fact that can be arranged after we get up there. Or at least later on. You will probably hear from Mrs. Gibson in a few days. Best wishes." Horizontal and vertical folds, vertical fold at the "G" of signature. Signature side lightly soiled. Overall, fine condition. Accompanied by original envelope, addressed in his hand, postmarked New York, N.Y., on same date. Lightly soiled. Torn flap on verso. Overall, fine condition. Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944) began his 30-year association with "Life" magazine in 1886, contributing weekly drawings and eventually becoming the magazine's editor (1918) and owner. The illustrator's "Gibson Girl", whom he called "The American Girl to all the world", delineated the American ideal of femininity and captured the spirit of an era. Two items.
