CHARLES "LUCKY" LUCIANO
This is an exceedingly rare letter from a gangster whom Time included on its list of "The 100 Most Important People of the Century". It's a two-page letter written in 1960 to Hollywood producer Barnett Glassman and may be in reference to a planned film, ultimately never made, on Luciano's life. Accompanied by a handwriting analysis of this letter.
Exceedingly Rare ALS:
"Charlie", 2p, separate sheets, 6x8¼. [Naples, Italy], August 26, 1960. To Barnett Glassman. In full: "Dear Barney, I want you to know that after you left, that party from Rome came to see me. I told him why you was looking for him, so I gave him one, now, if you should see him before you see me, there is only one hundred coming to him. My best to your wife. I would like to know if the lawyers are going to do something, in suing. Take care of yourself." Lightly creased. Nicked at lower edge. Folds, horizontal fold touches signature. BARNETT GLASSMAN was a Hollywood producer. In 1959, he met with Martin A. Gosch, an independent film producer, and they agreed in a deal to put together a film based on Luciano's life. However, in 1960, Tommy Eboli flew into Naples and warned Charlie that his friends in New York were not happy about the project and wanted it shelved, permanently. This letter to movie producer Barney Glassman may be about Eboli ("that party from Rome") and the film based on Luciano's life. The reference to "lawyers" and "suing" may be a reference to the film not being made. In 1961, Luciano and Gosch reached another agreement. Instead of a film, there would be a book. Over the next ten months, Luciano told Gosch the story of his life. The Last Testament of Lucky Luciano by Martin A. Gosch and Richard Hammer was published by Little, Brown & Co. in 1974. One of the most powerful mafia bosses of the 20th century, CHARLES "LUCKY" LUCIANO (1897-1962, born in Lercara Friddi, Sicily, Italy) teamed with Meyer Lansky and Bugsy Siegel to form a national crime syndicate by 1934 and was known as the "Boss of Bosses". Through bootlegging, prostitution and drug trafficking, Luciano built up wealth and stature in the organized crime community. In 1935, New York City Special Prosecutor Thomas E. Dewey stated: "The vice industry, since Luciano took over, is highly organized and operates with businesslike precision." Convicted on 62 counts in 1936, Luciano got 30 to 50 years in prison. In 1946, he was allowed to be deported for assisting the government during World War II in the Allied invasion of Sicily and for quelling dock sabotage throughout the east coast of the United States. He surfaced months later in Cuba. In 1947, the U.S. Bureau of Narcotics learned of Luciano's reappearance in the Americas. U.S. authorities claimed that he planned to headquarter a worldwide drug-smuggling operation in Cuba. Luciano was again deported to Italy. He settled in Naples. Money came to him by regular couriers from his mob friends. In the late 1950s, Luciano suffered a series of heart attacks and his business interests came under a lot of pressure because of serious cash flow problems. Money wasn't coming from friends in New York as frequently as before. On January 25, 1962, Luciano had arranged to meet Gosch at the Naples airport. His flight from Madrid arrived at 5 PM. As they both walked towards the baggage claim, Luciano collapsed onto the pavement. At 5:26 PM, according to the airport clock, as Gosch recalled it, Luciano shuddered and died of a heart attack. LUCKY LUCIANO IS ON "TIME" MAGAZINE'S LIST OF "THE 100 MOST IMPORTANT PEOPLE OF THE CENTURY". HE'S LISTED AMONG THE "BUILDERS AND TITANS", 20 INNOVATORS WHO CHANGED HOW THE WORLD WORKED, a list that also includes Walt Disney, Henry Ford, Bill Gates, Estee Lauder, Ray Kroc, and David Sarnoff. Accompanied by a two-page 1965 analysis of Luciano's handwriting by Dr. Irene Marcuse, signed: "Irene Marcuse". Staple holes at upper left blank. Creased. Soiled. Toned at edges. With a cover typed letter signed "Irene Marcuse" to Barnett Grassman [sic], lightly creased. Fine condition. Also: copy of an unsigned letter from Glassman to Marcuse requesting the handwriting/character analysis for this letter, identifying the writer just as a man named Charlie, about 60 years old. Short quote from Dr. Marcuse's analysis: "He has reached independence of thought and action - possesses the ability to plan and organize his tasks efficiently." Lightly creased. Fine condition. Four items.
