ALBERT KESSELRING. ALS: "Kesselring" in German in pencil, 1p, 8¼x11½. [Nuremberg], 1946 May 16. To Attorney at Law Dr. Laternser. In full: "I remind you of the documents. I ask you to talk to you today." At the top, Kesslering has signed: "Field Marshall Kesselring". At the bottom, he's written: "Via Office/with the request to transfer this note yet today." DR. HANS LATERNSER was Counsel at the Nuremberg Trials for the General Staff and High Command of the German Armed Forces. Luftwaffe Field Marshall ALBERT KESSELRING (1887-1960) was known for his skillful direction and defensive deployment of German forces during the Italian Campaign, 1943-1945. He was a witness at the Nuremberg Trials. On the day of this note, May 16, 1946, the Nuremberg Tribunal continued its questioning of Admiral Erich Raeder. Kesselring was tried by a British Military Court at Venice, Italy, February 17-May 6, 1947. He was charged with "being concerned in the killing as a reprisal of some 335 Italian nationals" in the Ardeatine Caves and with "inciting and commanding forces under his command to kill Italian civilians as reprisals in consequence of which a number of Italian civilians were killed". Kesselring was found guilty on both charges and sentenced to death by shooting. The sentence was then commuted to one of life imprisonment. Horizontal crease touches "g" in signature. ¼-inch tear at right and left blank margin. ½-inch tear at upper blank margin. Three ½-inch tears at lower blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
