BASEBALL SIGNED BY THE RIFLEMAN, CHICAGO CUBS FIRST BASEMAN CHUCK CONNORS
CHUCK CONNORS. Rare baseball signed: "Chuck/Connors".
Official Charles S. Feeney National League baseball signed on a side panel.
CHUCK CONNORS (1921-1992) played center for the Boston Celtics in the
1946-1947 season but left early for spring training with the Brooklyn
Dodgers. Baseball had always been his first love and for the next several years
he played in the minor leagues for Rochester, Norfolk, Newark, Newport News,
Mobile, and Montreal. On May 1, 1949, he grounded into a double play in his
only at bat for the Brooklyn Dodgers. After just five weeks on the Dodgers,
he was sent back to Montreal. After the 1950 season, he was traded to the
Chicago Cubs where he played in 66 games (201 AB, 16 runs, 48 hits, 5
doubles, 1 triple, 2 HRs, 18 RBIs, .239 batting average). The first baseman
was sent to the Cubs' Triple-A farm team, the Los Angeles Angels, in 1952. A
baseball fan who was also a casting director for M-G-M spotted Connors and
recommended him for a part in the Tracy-Hepburn comedy, Pat and Mike.
During the next few years he made 20 movies, culminating in a key role in
William Wyler's 1958 western, The Big Country. He also appeared on many
TV shows. Connors then starred in the hit western series, The Rifleman
(1958-1963). Lucas McCain, Connors' character on The Rifleman, was ranked
#32 in TV Guide's list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time" in the
June 20, 2004 issue. Chuck Connors' tombstone carries a "Rifleman" photo as
well as the logos from his three pro sports teams: the Celtics, the Dodgers, and
the Cubs. Minor toning.
