HENRY J. HEIMLICH. TLS: "Henry", 1p, 8½x11. Cincinnati, Ohio, 2003 July 23. On stationery of The Heimlich Institute to comedienne Phyllis Diller. In full: "I enjoyed speaking with you the other day and appreciated your letter. I left a message with John Lasseter's secretary and wrote the enclosed letter to him. It would be wonderful if he joins in this effort to save so many lives. Note from the enclosed article that you are part of Ohio's bicentennial. I am proud to know someone who is recognized and holds a place in 200 years of history. With sincere affection." Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Fine condition. Accompanied by a photocopy of Dr. Heimlich's letter to John Lasseter. Lightly creased. Fine condition. Dr. Henry J. Heimlich's career is notable for the abundance of creative, simple solutions he has provided for seemingly insurmountable health and medical problems. In 1945, he developed an innovative treatment for victims of trachoma, an incurable bacterial infection of the eyelids that was causing blindness throughout Asia and the Middle East. In the 1950s, Dr. Heimlich conceived of an operation to replace the esophagus which is used today to overcome birth defects of the esophagus. Heimlich then set out to develop a valve that would drain blood and air out of the chest cavity. In 1964, the Heimlich Chest Drain Valve was introduced. Today more than 250,000 Heimlich valves are used worldwide each year to treat patients with chest wounds, or following surgery. Each valve saves a life. In 1974, Dr. Heimlich published findings on what was to become the Heimlich Maneuver. A week later, the first choking victim was saved by the method. Since its introduction, the Heimlich Maneuver has saved 50,000 people in the U.S. alone from choking or drowning. Two items.
