HOWARD THURSTON. TLS: "Howard Thurston", 1p, 7x9¼. New York City, 1927 December 12. On his "Thurston the Magician" letterhead to Walter Phillipson, Bridgeport, Conn. In full: "Thanks for calling my attention to Mystery Stories. I shall get it at once as I am interested in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. We are doing wonderfully well here, turning them away the last half of the week and a big sale now. Lots of publicity. We are giving a matinee Wednesday for crippled children and we could use several hundred packages of candy but haven't heard from the candy company. We could get considerable publicity for this candy company if they sent us small packages. Hope things are going well with you. Kind regards." Typed postscript: "P.S. Enclose a good luck charm." [Charm not present] At the time Thurston wrote this letter, he was at the height of popularity and was making millions of dollars with his magic show, "The Wonder Show of the Universe", which toured throughout the U.S. and the world. The last great vaudeville magician, Thurston (1869-1936) had purchased Harry Kellar's show and became Kellar's successor. He would reign as one of the most famous magicians in the U.S. for more than three decades. At its peak, Thurston's show featured 18 large-scale illusions and required 40 assistants - as well as ten railway baggage cars to transport scenery and equipment. His large, sensational feats included making a Whippet automobile filled with beautiful girls disappear, the Levitation of the Princess Karnak and the sensational appearances or disappearances of animals including lions and horses. Thurston, who was the first magician to bring his show to Broadway, was also an expert at exploiting the commercial opportunities inherent in his shows and his widespread fame. He created souvenir programs and pitch books and used the value of his name to create such advertising premiums as "Thurston's Book of Magic", put out by Swift Hams. Later, as movies began to cut into his crowds, he scaled down his show and appeared in theaters in conjunction with a feature film. Lightly creased, touching signature, else fine condition.
