JACK BROOKS - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 01/02/1969
JACK BROOKS
Jack Brooks sends a typed letter for the good wishes on his birthday and anniversary.
Typed Letter Signed: "Jack Brooks" as U.S. Representative from Texas, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1969 January 2. On letterhead of "Congress of the United States/House of Representatives" to Mr. Danny Franklin, Sunnyslope, Arizona. In full: "Thank you for your thoughtfulness and good wishes on my birthday and anniversary...it is persons like you who make occasions like these even more memorable. Certainly appreciate your kind words on my re-election and am more than happy to enclose some of my campaign materials as keepsakes for you. You may be interested to know that my 9th Congressional District now includes my old Jefferson County, Chambers and Galveston Counties. Pleased to make a special request in your behalf for President and Mrs. Johnson's autographs and will forward them on to you as soon as I receive them. Want you to know how much I enjoyed your warm letter and look forward to hearing from you again. In the meantime, with every good wish in the new year, I am, Sincerely". Enclosures not present. Jack Brooks (1922-2012) represented Texas in the US House of Representatives for 42 years (1953-1995). Brooks chaired the House Committee on Government Operations (1975-1988) and the Judiciary Committee (1989-1995). Conservative on many issues, Brooks was an early southern supporter of civil rights legislation, sponsoring the 1964 Civil Rights Act. His support for the federal assault weapons ban contributed to his defeat in 1994, when he became the most senior Congressional incumbent ever to be defeated in a general election. Brooks was in the Presidential motorcade in Dallas on November 22, 1963, when President Kennedy was assassinated. He was aboard Air Force One on the return trip to Washington, when fellow Texan Lyndon Johnson took the Presidential oath. Brooks represented Texas' 9th Congressional District from 1965 to 1995. For his first 12 years in Congress, he represented the 2nd District. Slightly creased. Light paper clip impression and rust stain at upper left margin. Light circular rust stain at lower right portion is near but does not touch the "s" of Brooks. Overall, fine condition.
