CHARLIE THE LITTLE TRAMP CHAPLIN - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 05/24/1949 CO-SIGNED BY: MARY PICKFORD

TWO OF THE ORIGINAL FOUNDERS OF UNITED ARTISTS EXPRESS CONCERN OVER PROPOSED DISPOSITION OF COMPANY ASSETS AND REQUEST, AS STOCKHOLDERS, THAT THEY BE KEPT INFORMED AND THAT THEIR OPINIONS BE HEARD

MARY PICKFORD and CHARLIE CHAPLIN.
Typed DS: "Mary Pickford" and "Charles Chaplin", 1p, 8½x11. Beverly Hills, California, 1949 May 24. In letter form to Mr. Gradwell Sears, Pres., United Artists Corp., New York, N.Y. In full: "We understand there has been some discussion by the Board and the officers of the possibility of a sale or other disposition of certain of the assets of United Artists Corporation, specifically the English interests. The extent to which such discussions have progressed or the proposals in connection there with are not entirely clear to us. In the past we have never been consulted about the sale of United Artists' assets nor have we had anything to do with the disbursements of the money received from the liquidation of the company's assets. As stockholders of United Artists Corporation we are, of course, vitally interested in the preservation of all of its assets for its benefit. We would jointly request, therefore, that before any commitments be made by either the officers or the Board with respect to any of the major assets of the company, including, of course, the English interests, or any basic change in the methods of distribution of pictures, either here or abroad, the stockholders be fully advised of the nature of any proposals or contemplated action in ample time to permit us to give consideration thereto and to furnish the Board with our considered views in connection therewith for the benefit of the Board. We are sending a copy of this letter to each of the members of the Board. Very truly yours". In 1919, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Charles Chaplin and D.W. Griffith had founded United Artists to distribute their future productions. In 1936, Pickford became First Vice President of the company. MARY PICKFORD (1893-1979) began working at Biograph Studios in 1909 at $40 a week. By 1912, she was making $500 weekly at Adolph Zukor's Famous Players. Her salary was doubled periodically. In 1916, Pickford, the first superstar of the movies, signed an astounding contract with Zukor for $10,000 a week plus a $300,000 bonus plus the formation of The Mary Pickford Company (later, The Pickford Corporation), a studio devoted exclusively to the making of her films. She was also to share the profits in Zukor's studio. In 1920, Pickford married actor Douglas Fairbanks. They separated in 1933, which coincided with Pickford retiring from the movies. Pickford and Fairbanks were divorced in January 1936. In 1937, she established the Mary Pickford Cosmetics Company - and married her former co-star, Charles "Buddy" Rogers. The first great screen comedian, and arguably the best of all time, CHARLIE CHAPLIN (1889-1977) was also a talented director and screenwriter. In the silent era, his many outstanding films included Tillie's Punctured Romance (1914), The Kid (1921), Gold Rush (1925) and City Lights (1931). Chaplin was less consistently successful in the talking era, the great strength of "the Little Tramp" having been physical comedy, but his later noteworthy films included Modern Times (1936), The Great Dictator (1940) and Limelight (1952). Signatures of "America's Sweetheart" and "The Little Tramp" together are very desirable. This is a fine example relating to their interests in United Artists. Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold at the "P" of Pickford and the "s" of Charles. Staple holes at upper left corner, "Directors/Meeting" written in blue pencil at upper left margin. Fine condition.
