IMPEACHMENT CONGRESS: 1868
Signatures of 18 Senators, 6 Representatives, and 4 territorial delegates on a manuscript document ordering copies of a Senate speech delivered one month before the House voted to impeach President Andrew Johnson. Many of these signers, including Benjamin Wade, Benjamin Butler and Oliver Morton, were of great importance in the Civil War and Reconstruction eras.
Manuscript DS by 28 members of the 40th Congress of the United States, 1 page, 8x12½. Washington, circa 1868 January 16. Order form for copies of the "Speech of Hon. William M. Stewart/of Nevada on the Bill To establish a/National School of Mines/Delivered in the Senate Jan. 16th 1868/To be printed McGill & Wetherow's Globe Office at $2 per 100". Each Senator or Representative has added the number of copies ordered next to his signature: "Wm M. Stewart 3000", "C. Cole 500", "O.P. Morton 200", "H.W. Corbett 200", "J.M. Thayer 200", "W.H. Hooper 100", "J.K. Moorhead 200", "Benj F. Butler 100", "G.M. Chilcott 200", "B.F. Wade 300" in pencil, "W. Higby 100", "Coles Bashford 200", "J. Fran Chaves 200", "Lewis Selye 200", "N.P. Banks 100", "Alex G. Cattell 200", "J M Howard 200", "F.T. Frelinghuysen 200", "J.W. Nye 300", "H.B. Anthony 100", "T.O. Howe 100", "Z. Chandler 200", "Geo H. Williams 100", "Alex. Ramsey 100", "J.W. Patterson 100", "D.R. Ashley 200", "S.C. Pomeroy 100" and "E.G. Ross 300." STEWART was one of Nevada's first two U.S. Senators. CORNELIUS COLE represented California in the U.S. Senate. Indiana Senator OLIVER H.P.T. MORTON was a member of the 1877 Electoral Commission that decided the Hayes-Tilden election. HENRY W. CORBETT was U.S. Senator from Oregon. JOHN M. THAYER was one of Nebraska's first two U.S. Senators, later serving as Governor of the Territory of Wyoming. WILLIAM H. HOOPER was Delegate from the Territory of Utah. JAMES K. MOORHEAD was President of the Atlantic & Ohio Telegraph Co., which later became Western Union Telegraph Co., before his election as Representative from Pennsylvania. BENJAMIN F. BUTLER, Representative from Massachusetts, was one of the House managers appointed to conduct impeachment proceedings against President Johnson. GEORGE M. CHILCOTT, Delegate from the Territory of Colorado, later served in the U.S. Senate. Senator BENJAMIN F. WADE of Ohio was President Pro Tempore of the Senate and would have been 18th U.S. President had Johnson been removed from office. WILLIAM HIGBY represented California. COLES BASHFORD, first Republican Governor of Wisconsin, was Delegate from the Territory of Arizona. JOSE FRANCISCO CHAVES, born in Padillas, Mexico (now New Mexico), was Delegate from the Territory of New Mexico; he was assassinated in 1904. LEWIS SELYE represented New York in the House of Representatives from 1867-1869. NATHANIEL P. BANKS was Speaker of the House and Governor of Massachusetts before the Civil War; he served as a Representative from Massachusetts after the war. ALEXANDER G. CATTELL was U.S. Senator from New Jersey. JACOB M. HOWARD represented Michigan in the U.S. Senate. FREDERICK T. FRELINGHUYSEN was U.S. Senator from New Jersey. JAMES W. NYE was one of Nevada's first two U.S. Senators. HENRY B. ANTHONY, former Governor of Rhode Island, served in the U.S. Senate for 25 years. TIMOTHY O. HOWE represented Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate. ZACHARIAH CHANDLER was U.S. Senator from Michigan before and after he served as Secretary of the Interior under President Grant (1875-1877). Oregon Senator GEORGE H. WILLIAMS later served as Attorney General under Grant (1872-1875). ALEXANDER RAMSEY, Minnesota Governor and Senator, was Secretary of War under Hayes (1879-1881). JAMES W. PATTERSON represented New Hampshire in the House and U.S. Senate. DELOS R. ASHLEY represented Nevada in the House of Representatives from 1865-1869. SAMUEL C. POMEROY was one of the first two U.S. Senators from Kansas. Edmund G. Ross, Republican Senator from Kansas, was the only undecided vote when the roll was called in the impeachment trial. His vote of "not guilty" ended the prospect of the President's removal from office. A remarkable assemblage, on one page, of the signatures of 18 U.S. Senators who voted in Johnson's impeachment trial, six U.S. Representatives who participated in the impeachment of the President and delegates from the territories of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah -- 28 signatures in all! Heading above signatures is light but legible. Lightly creased. Folds touch some signatures. 2 tears at blank edges have been repaired with paper on verso. Chipped at blank left edge, which has ½-inch separation at mid-horizontal fold. Lightly soiled, stray ink marks. Verso has pencil notes and ink docket (unknown hand), light show-through of docket at right margin. Accompanied by a photocopy of the six-page bill introduced by Senator Stewart as printed in The Congressional Globe. Lightly creased. Staple holes at upper left and right corners. Overall, fine condition. Two items.
