SOPHIE TUCKER - AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED 05/05/1945 CO-SIGNED BY: MARGUERITE HENRY, MORRIS FISHBEIN - DOCUMENT 29577

SOPHIE TUCKER, CO-SIGNED BY: MORRIS FISHBEIN and MARGUERITE HENRY
Guestbook page signed by singer Sophie Tucker, JAMA editor Morris Fishbein and children's author Marguerite Henry.
Autograph notes signed "5/5/45/Chicago Ill/The authoress/Sophie Tucker/must put her/name in here./O. Yes", "It's grand for me to be/under Sophie Tucker even/if I'd rather be elsewhere/Morris Fishbein M. D./5-12-45" and "With a whinny of appreciation to/Rose Oller from the Little Fellow/and Marguerite Henry/May 19, 1945" in blue and black inks. One unidentified signature on verso. 1 page, 7½x11½. After immigrating from Russia as an infant, TUCKER (1884-1966, born Sonia Kalish in Russia), began singing in her father's kosher restaurant in Hartford, Connecticut. Moving to New York, she established herself as a popular star of vaudeville and Broadway, appearing with the Ziegfeld Follies in 1909. In 1911, she recorded Some of These Days, which became her signature song and the title of her 1945 autobiography. Other songs made famous by Tucker included Red-Hot Mama (in 1928, the Palace Theater in New York billed her as "The Last of the Red-Hot Mamas", a slogan that became synonymous with the bawdy singer-entertainer). Another song, My Yiddische Mama, became all the more popular among European Jewry after it was banned by Hitler. Tucker, who made her film debut in Honky Talk (1929), made numerous film appearances in the 1950s and 1960s, and her TV appearances include several visits to the Ed Sullivan Show. Although Tucker tried all modes of entertainment, she preferred live cabaret audiences. FISHBEIN (1889-1976) was an American medical doctor and editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) from 1924 to 1950. On June 21, 1937, Fishbein had been featured on the cover of Time magazine, and he protested in an inside article about FDR's plan to federalize the medical profession. Fishbein, as editor of American Medical Association publications, said that medicine "is practiced as an art and as a science, without any reference to hours of work or any fixed formula for its administration..." In 1970, he endowed the Morris Fishbein Center for the study of history of science and medicine at the University of Chicago. HENRY (1902-1997, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin) is best known for her stories about horses. Her works include Misty of Chincoteague and the Newbery Medal-winning King of the Wind, both of which were made into feature films. She first published The Little Fellow in 1945. Lightly toned at edges. Henry's note, but not signature, is lightly smeared in places but legible. Irregular left edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
