Photograph signed: "Souvanna Phouma" B/w, 5x7. Accompanied by, Transmittal Typed Letter signed: "S. Norindr" as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, 1 page, 8¼x10½. Vientiane (Laos), 1975 January 21. Written to M. Stanley Kollin, New York, United States of America, in part: "I have the honor to enclose herewith a signed photograph of His Highness Prince Souvanna Phouma, Prime Minister of Laos" Prince Souvanna Phouma (1901-1984), son of the last Laotian King, was Prime Minister of Laos 1951-1954, 1956-1958, 1960, 1962-1975. Although French educated, he supported the Free Laos movement for independence after World War II, fleeing to Thailand when France reasserted control. He returned in 1949, when France accorded a degree of self-government. For a quarter of a century, Prince Souvanna headed the neutralist faction in Laos, attempting to avoid alignment with either the Western powers or the Vietnamese communists. When the pro-communist Pathet Lao assumed full control in 1975, he resigned from office but remained as an advisor to the new government. Lightly worn. Lightly creased. Signature in poor contrast (still legible). Otherwise, fine condition.
