Signature: "April 27, 197[blank]./Henry M Jackson", 7¼x9¾. Newspaper photograph, b/w, 1¾x3, affixed at mid-right margin. Henry Martin "Scoop" Jackson (1912-1983) was a U.S. Representative (1941-1953) and a U.S. Senator from Washington from 1953, when his fellow "freshmen Senators" included John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts and Mike Mansfield of Montana, until his death in 1983. During his tenure, Jackson Chaired the Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs (88th-95th Congresses) and served on the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources (95th-96th Congresses). He was also the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1960-1961 and a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1972 and 1976. Jackson was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1984. In February 2005, a document security team from the Central Intelligence Agency searched Senator Jackson's papers at the University of Washington library and removed several papers previously available to scholars. Chipped at blank left edge and rounded right corners. Fine condition.
