WILLIAM M. TWEED
Boss Tweed gives a firefighter permission to wear a Badge.
Partly Printed DS: "Wm M. Tweed" as Commissioner, 1p, 13¾x11. New York, 1862 March 10. In part: "The Board of Commissioners, of the New York Fire Department Hereby Give Permission, To James N. Arnold residing at No. 218 West 24th Street lately connected with Hose Company No. 30 to wear Badge Register No. 21 subject however to the penalties prescribed by Sections Nos 7, 8 & 9 of an ordinance of the Common Council passed June 27th 1859 and also to a Resolution of the Commissioners." Sections 7, 8 and 9 are printed on this document. The penalties for misuse of the Badge were severe. From Section 8, in part: "if any badge shall become broken or the figures be displaced while in the possession of such member...he shall return the same forthwith to the said Commissioners and in default of the same said member may be expelled or suspended...." From Section 9, in part: "Any member...who shall violate any of the foregoing sections of this Ordinance, shall be subject to a fine of not less than twenty five nor over two hundred and fifty Dollars, and to imprisonment for the term of ten days...." William Marcy "Boss" Tweed controlled nominations and patronage in New York City politics after 1857 through his control of the Democratic organization. That organization was called "Tammany Hall", as that was the name of its Madison Avenue offices. The Tweed Ring, which consisted of Tweed, the Mayor, the City Comptroller and the City Chamberlain, sold political favors and defrauded the city of at least $30 million. Tweed put his friends into influential positions, and held many himself, including being Commissioner of the New York Fire Department. He was convicted in 1873, imprisoned, released in 1875, arrested on a civil action, escaped to Spain, extradited in 1876 and died in a New York City jail in 1878. Vertical folds, one touches the second "e" in Tweed. Lightly creased, soiled at blank margins. Nailhead-size stain in text. Overall, fine condition.
