CHRISTOPHER R. PERRY
Christopher R. Perry sends a scarce manuscript letter from the United States Frigate General Greene asking for a letter to be sent to Congress for a recommendation for a promotion.
Scarce Manuscript LS:
"Chris Raymond Perry," 2p, 7½x9¼, front and verso. On board the United States Frigate General Greene, off Mont Christ, 1800 January 28. THE FATHER OF AMERICAN NAVAL OFFICERS OLIVER, MATTHEW, RAYMOND, JAMES, AND NATHANAEL PERRY, AND FATHER-IN-LAW OF NAVAL OFFICER GEORGE W. RODGERS AND DR. WILLIAM BUTLER (NAVAL SURGEON, AT THE BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS) writes to Honbl Benjamin Bourne, Esquire. In full: "Permit me to solicit from you a letter to your Friends in Congress, or to the Honbl Benjamin Stoddert Secretary of the Navy, in favor of Mr George Washington Few for a Lieutenancy. He has sailed with me a sufficient time for me to be acquainted with his merit as a Seaman and Navigator and I do pledge my Word that he is every way qualified for the appointment he solicits. It would be superfluous in me to say that the son of Colonel William Few is a man of Courage." With integral address leaf: "Honbl Benjamin Bourne Esquire/Judge for the District of Rhode Island/Bristol." Perry served in the Revolutionary War and was captured and kept a prisoner at Newry, Ireland, where he met his future wife, Sarah. They were married after the war at the home of Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Perry later made voyages to the East Indies and, in 1798, was made post-captain in the U.S. Navy. HE BUILT AND COMMANDED THE GENERAL GREENE, cruising in the West Indies, cooperating with Toussaint L'Ouverture in the civil war in Santo Domingo (1799-1801). IT WAS OFF THE COAST OF SANTO DOMINGO, ABOARD THE SHIP HE BUILT, THAT PERRY WROTE THIS LETTER; Montecristi is on the northern coast of the island. In 1801, Perry was made Collector of Newport. Colonel William Few, Member of the Continental Congress from 1780-1788, was one of the first two U.S. Senators from Georgia. Yellow stains throughout, but completely legible. Mounting remnant in blank area of address leaf, one fold through the "C" in Chris and touches outer loop of "P" in Perry. Pencil notes below signature (in another hand), else fine.
