EDWARD EGGLESTON - AUTOGRAPH SENTIMENT SIGNED
EDWARD EGGLESTON
Small card signed "Autograph of Yours Truly" by author and historian Edward Eggleston. He wrote popular books like The Hoosier Schoolmaster and The Circuit Rider in the 1870s and 1880s before writing about history.
Autograph sentiment signed "Autograph of/Yours truly/Edw. Eggleston". Black ink notations in bottom right corner in unknown hand. 3x2¼ card. Indiana-born Eggleston (1837-1902) held many jobs during his life - itinerant preacher, magazine editor, grammar school teacher and even laborer in Minnesota - but is know today primarily as an author and historian. His books and stories, which were popular in his day, are valued today more for their realism than their literary worth. Eggleston's works include The Hoosier Schoolmaster (1871), loosely based on the experiences of his brother and fellow teacher George Cary Eggleston, and The Circuit Rider: A Tale of the Heroic Age (1874), based on his own experiences as a traveling Methodist preacher. He turned to writing about history after a 1879 trip to Europe. Eggleston's most significant works in that subject include Beginners of a Nation (1896) and Transit of Civilization from England to America (1900). Lightly toned, soiled and rippled. Holes from pin at top edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
