ALICE BRADY
The actress, who will soon be opening in a new play, writes to her step-mother about attempting to meet with her father, Broadway producer William A. Brady.
ALS: "Alice" in pencil, 2p, 8¾x5½, front and verso. No place, no date, 2:30 A.M. On blue stationery with dark blue border to "'Mom' dear". In full: "Have delayed writing as I have been working day & night - Have just come home now - dead - I want to thank you for your Easter gift - it was very sweet - I got Snaps some things for Easter - I made a date with Father for last Thursday - dinner - but he went to Bill's until today - and Miss Healy said not to call him up - am phoning him tomorrow to ask him to dress rehearsal - We open on Thursday - grand play - for [illegible] been very sweet to me always - and I love you - Good night with my love". Brady's father was Broadway producer William A. Brady, who was also involved in filmmaking and was involved in the early fight against censorship. Brady's mother, who was also named Alice, died in 1896. Since Alice did not make her Broadway debut until 1911, this letter was written to her step-mother, Broadway actress Grace George. Stage and screen actress Alice Brady (1892-1939), who began her film career at the age of 22, won the 1938 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the 1937 film, In Old Chicago, and she had been nominated for the Oscar in the same category in 1937 for My Man Godfrey (1936). Ironically, Brady never recevied the statuette. She was not present at the ceremony and an imposter accepted the award for her. Both he and the Oscar disappeared and neither were ever found. Brady died before the Academy could issue another statuette. Brady's long list of both silents and "talkies" includes As Ye Sow (1914, her debut), The Gilded Cage (1916), The Gay Divorcee (1934), Go West Young Man (1936) and Young Mr. Lincoln (1939, her final film). Brady, who made her Broadway debut in 1911, would star in over three dozen plays on the Great White Way until 1933. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Minor wear at edges at folds. Fine condition.
