EARLY BRITISH FINANCIAL ADMINISTRATOR & STATESMAN SIGNS AN ORDER TO PAY TWO SOLDIERS

SIDNEY GODOLPHIN
.
Partly Printed DS: "S. Godolphin", "L. Hyde" and "Ed Dering", 1p, 9½x13½. Whitehall Treasury Chambers, 1679 July 7. "To Our very loving Friend, Sir Robert Howard Kt. Auditor of the Receipt of His Majesties Exchequer." An order to pay two soldiers. In part: "After Our hearty Commendations; Whereas by the Act of Parliament now lately Passed, for Granting a Supply to His MAJESTY of 206462 l. 17s. 3d. for Paying off, and Disbanding the Forces Raised since the 29th of September 1677, We are Authorized to issue the Money thereby Granted without any Privy Seal or other Warrant from the KING, to the end the same may be Paid with most Expedition...." SIDNEY GODOLPHIN (1645-1712) was Lord of the Treasury in 1679, later becoming Lord High Treasurer of England in 1700 and 1701. On the accession of Queen Anne in 1702, Godolphin was reappointed to the Treasury and became in effect "chief minister". The early stability of his ministry, based on a Tory majority and his own and his friend the Duke of Marlboroughs's friendship with the Queen, was gradually eroded. Godolphin, a Tory, became increasingly dependent on the support of the Whigs, especially in order to carry on the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1704, he was knighted and in 1706, he was created Viscount Rialton and Earl of Godolphin. The unpopularity of the War was a major factor in the fall of the ministry in 1710. LAWRENCE HYDE, 1st Earl of Rochester, was 1st Lord of the Treasury (1679-1685) and Viceroy of Ireland (1700-1703). SIR EDWARD DERING was Commissioner of the Treasury from 1679-1684. Fragile. Lightly soiled with shaded edges which touch signatures. Edges show wear, nicks and are irregularly torn. Lightly creased. Horizontal folds (not at signatures).
