TONY GALENTO. Inscribed signature: "To Ralph/Best Wishes/Tony Galento", 4¼x2, irregularly cut, affixed to verso of 5x3 ruled index card. Ink notes (unknown hand): "Galento, Tony" at upper left margin and "March 30, 1939/Lowe's State" at lower right margin. On June 28, 1939, less than three months after he signed this autograph, Galento would challenge Joe Louis for the heavyweight title in Yankee Stadium before 30,000 fans. The fight was stopped in the fourth round, after which Galento, who had stunned the crowd by knocking Louis to the canvas in the third round, required 23 stitches to close a cut to the mouth. One of the most colorful characters to contend for the heavyweight boxing title, Tony Galento (1910-1979), born Dominic Anthony Galento, was known for his dirty fighting, which included deliberately head-butting, gouging, hitting below the belt and elbowing his opponents. Galento, who fought professionally between 1928 and 1943, boasted of training on beer, hamburgers and spaghetti, and once downed over 50 hot dogs shortly before a fight with Arthur DeKuh (Galento won the fight in four rounds). His other memorable fights include bouts with former champion Max Baer, who won the match when the referee stopped the fight in the eighth round, and contender Lou Nova, who was beaten in the 14th round in what is reputed to be one of the dirtiest and bloodiest matches ever fought. Galento, who retired from boxing in 1943, then became a wrestling referee before he retired to his New Jersey bar and turned to acting, appearing in several films, including On The Waterfront (1954), The Best Things in Life Are Free (1956) and Wind Across the Everglades (1958). He also tried stand-up comedy and even appeared on TV with Joe Louis, with whom he had become friends. Light diagonal crease touches one letter of inscription. Card is lightly soiled. Fine condition.
