KING FREDERICK WILLIAM III (PRUSSIA) - MANUSCRIPT LETTER SIGNED 04/23/1817
KING FREDERICK WILLIAM III (PRUSSIA). Manuscript Letter signed as King of Prussia: "Frederic Guillaume", 1p, 8x9¾. Berlin, 1817 April 23. To Chevalier le Graverend, Attorney to the King's Council, Paris. In French. The King acknowledges receipt of his letter of March 31 and an enclosed treatise intended for publication concerning criminal legislation in France. Recognizing the importance of this subject, and thanking Graverend for sending it, the King encloses a medal as a mark of his consideration. Frederick William III, born in 1770, became King of Prussia in 1797, reigning until his death (1840). The early years of his reign were dominated by the politics of the Napoleonic Wars, with King Frederick William trying unsuccessfully to keep Prussia neutral, only to be crushingly defeated by Napoleon at Jena (1806). Re-entering the struggle after an alliance with Russia and Austria (1813), Prussian troops helped defeat Napoleon and restore the Bourbon monarchy in France, reaffirming that result with the victory at Waterloo (1815). The King became increasingly conservative in his later years, abandoning his promise to create a Prussian constitution. Red ink note (unknown hand) below signature. ¼" segment of paper on left edge missing, removing the first digit of the date ("1817). Lightly creased, with some rippling over top three lines of text (not signature).
