THOMAS BUTLER KING
 Ink signature on a slip of paper
 Signature: "T. Butler King/Georgia", 3½x1¼. Thomas Butler King (1800-1864), born in Massachusetts, moved to Georgia to practice law and married the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner. Acquiring several plantations and investing in canal and railroad projects, King served in the state legislature before being elected to Congress as a Whig in 1838. He served through 1852. A vocal advocate of US Naval power, King was very disappointed when President Taylor did not appoint him Secretary of the Navy, but he accepted an alternate appointment as the President's special agent to California. Lower edge cut irregularly. Left edge chipped. Creased. Lightly toned and foxed.
