CIVIL WAR: UNION [GENERAL CHARLES YATES]. Autograph Telegram signed: "Thomas M Vincent" as Asst Adjt. Genl, 1p, 5½x8¾. Washington, D.C., 1863 June 19. On American Telegraph Company partly printed form to General Charles Yates. In full: "Lieut. Col. Reeve chief mustering officer has been ordered to muster the second brigade as requested by you." THOMAS M. VINCENT was a staff member of the Adjutant General's Office at the War Department in Washington, D.C. He frequently corresponded with Union officers regarding raising volunteer troops to serve during the war. Recruitment efforts had to conform to the War Department's Revised Mustering Regulations of 1862 and appointments of officers were made by the War Department. General CHARLES YATES was with the 5th New York Infantry, and troops were deployed to him to defend railroad facilities at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Two weeks after this letter was written (July 1-3, 1863), the Army of the Potomac, some 85,000 Union troops, including units from New York, under George G. Meade faced a Confederate forceof about 75,000 under Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in what became the largest battle fought in the Western Hemisphere. Although the Union victory turned the tide of the Civil War, both sides suffered staggering losses: about 23,000 Union and 25,000 Confederate casualties. While it is unclear as to whether Yates had his second brigade at this time, records of the Battle of Cold Creek the following year show the 5th New York Infantry being comprised of two brigades and a volunteer unit, the famous Duryee Zouaves. Mid-vertical fold touches the "s" in Thomas. ½x¼-inch file hole touches 7 lines of printed text (paper intact). Overall, fine condition.
