 Aviation pioneers who flew the northern route sign Arctic envelope.
 Philatelic Envelope signed: "Amelia Earhart", "Hubert Wilkins/April 21st 1928" and "T.H. 'Doc' Kinkade", 6½x3½. Early Post Office Department-approved "Via/Air Mail" envelope bearing two-cent Washington stamp, postmarked Barrow, Alaska, April 14, 1928. Rubber stamped "Svalbard/Radio" at upper left. This envelope is numbered "000077" on verso. AMELIA EARHART, the world's greatest aviatrix, became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, Newfoundland to Wales, two months later, June 17-18, 1928. HUBERT WILKINS flew from Barrow, Alaska to the Svalbard (Spitsbergen) archipelago north of Norway, over Arctic regions, on April 16, 1928, two days after this envelope was postmarked. He was knighted by King George V for this flight. Wilkins signed this envelope five days after his 2100-mile, 20½-hour flight ended. It is possible that this envelope was carried on this flight as it bears both "Barrow" and "Svalbard" stampings. THOMAS HAROLD "DOC" KINKADE was service engineer for the Wright Aeronautical Corporation and supervised the final inspection of the Wright Whirlwind motor used in Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis for his historic flight across the Atlantic on May 20-21, 1927. He was in charge of the mechanics and supervised the final tests for Admiral Byrd's flight over the North Pole, was the engineer for Charles Levine's Columbia and oversaw Levine and Chamberlin's 1927 flight to Germany in the Bellanca airplane. Soiled. Overall, fine condition.
