JULIUS ROSENWALD
Julius Rosenwald, Chairman of Sears, Roebuck & Co., signed this typed letter to Secretary of the Interior Franklin K. Lane in 1914. In it, he expresses his admiration for a patriotic address made by Lane, Makers of the Flag, which Rosenwald said "should be memorized by every American child."
Typed letter signed: "Julius Rosenwald" as President of Sears, Roebuck and Co., 1p, 7x11, on starionery of Sears, Roebuck & Co. Aug. 19, 1914. Addressed to Secretary of the Interior Franklin K. Lane. In full: "Dear Mr. Lane: It is with much pleasure that I remember the evening we met at Mr. Bell's residence. I was thrilled by the 'Makers of the Flag' and am enclosing a reprint. To my mind this should be memorized by every American child. My own re-cited it for my recent birthday and it thrilled the thirty-odd people who happened to be present on that occasion. I hope a way will be found to furnish it to every school throughout the country. If you have any requests for copies, I should be glad to have you send them to me and I will take care of them as long as my supply lasts. I have had quite a quantity printed. Grateful for the inspiration, and with assurances of my high esteem". In this letter Rosenwald is referring to Flag Makers, a patriotic address on the meaning of the American flag, which was delivered by Secretary of the Interior FRANKLIN K. LANE (1864-1921) to more than 1,000 employees of the Department of the Interior on Flag Day, June 14, 1914. Lane served as Secretary of the Interior from 1913 to 1920 under President Woodrow Wilson, who appointed Rosenwald as a member of the Advisory Commission of the Council of National Defense in 1916. American merchant and philanthropist Rosenwald (1862-1932) was President (1910-1925) and later Chairman of the Board of the mail-order house of Sears, Roebuck & Company. The company was founded in 1893 by Richard W. Sears (1863-1914) and Alvah C. Roebuck (1864-1948). In 1917, Rosenwald established the Julius Rosenwald Fund, one of his many educational philanthropies. Lightly creased. Worn edges. File holes at upper blank margin. Interior Department receipt stamp, "Aug 21 1914" right of salutation. File notes (unknown hand on verso, no show through). Overall, fine condition.
