LON CHANEY, SR, WILLIAM HAINES and ELEANOR BOARDMAN
Photo signed by all three stars during the filming of Tell It to the Marines, shown with a real war hero, General Smedley Butler.
Photograph signed: "Lon Chaney", "Eleanor Boardman" and "William Haines". Sepia, 10x8 overall, image 8¼x6¾ (one surface). Also in the photograph, but not signing, is Brigadier General Smedley Butler, Commander of the Marine Barracks at San Diego and winner of two Congressional Medals of Honor. This photograph was taken in San Diego in 1926 during the filming of Tell It to the Marines. LON CHANEY starred as Sgt. O'Hara. WILLIAM HAINES played Pvt. "Skeet" Burns.. ELEANOR BOARDMAN was Norma Dale. Chaney (1883-1930), known as "the man of a thousand faces", died four years later at the age of 47. His signature is rare in any form. Haines (1900-1973), a major star in the late silent era, was effectively banished from films a decade later after defying an ultimatum from Louis B. Mayer that he conceal his gay orientation. He had a successful second career as an interior designer, whose clients included Ronald and Nancy Reagan. Boardman (1898-1981) gained fame as "the Kodak girl" in a poster ad campaign by the camera company. She starred in silent movies of the 1920s and made a successful transition to talkies in the next decade. Chaney and Boardman signatures have good contrast, Haines' has adequate contrast. Caption typed on verso, light letter impressions at upper blank margin. Lightly soiled in blank margins, slight nick at bottom edge. Overall, fine condition.
