Signature of the infamous New Jersey Congressman and Mayor
Signature: "Hugh Joseph Addonizio". 3½x2. Hugh Joseph Addonizio (1914-1981) was an Italian-American Democratic politician, serving the state of New Jersey in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1949 to 1962. He was also the Mayor of Newark from 1962-1970. In World War II he earned a Silver Star and the rank of Captain. Once a trusted crusader against city corruption, Addonizio was discovered to have embezzled fortunes from Newark's city contractors. He and other members of his staff were convicted, and the two succeeding Newark Mayors were also convicted of similar crimes. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
