IVO FRANCIS WALTER BLIGH, EARL OF DARNLEY VIII
The Member of Parliament who captained the English cricket team through its first Ashes series signs and pens a sentiment on this slip of paper
Autograph Sentiment Signed: "Yours sincerely/ Darnley" 2¼x1¾ affixed to a 3¼x2½ piece of paper. Also included is a clipping, 1¾x1½, about the title of Earl of Darnley, affixed beneath slip of paper containing autograph sentiment. Ivo Francis Walter Bligh, 8th Earl of Darnley, (1859-1927), was a British nobleman who went on to serve in the UK parliament. He also was an accomplished cricketer, functioning as the captain of England and the MCC team during the first Test cricket series versus Australia that saw The Ashes at stake in 1882/83. He succeeded his brother in the earldom, becoming Earl of Darnley in 1900. The following year, he was appointed both a deputy lieutenant and justice of the peace for Kent. In addition, he was named honorary colonel of the 4th Volunteer Battalion, The Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) on July 16, 1902. Bligh was elected to the House of Lords as an Irish representative peer in 1905. Lightly toned. Small indentation toward lower right-hand corner. Vertical crease toward left-hand side of slip of paper containing signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
