1963 first day cover honoring the 50th anniversary of the Workmen's Compensation Law and with a printed b/w photo of President John F. Kennedy, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson and Postmaster General J. Edward Day. Signed by Day.
First day cover signed: "J. Edward Day". B/w, 10x8 overall, image 9½x5¾ (one surface). President John F. Kennedy, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson and Postmaster General J. Edward Day are shown at the 1961 First Day ceremonies of the 4-cent stamp honoring the 50th anniversary of the Workmen's Compensation Law. The stamp is affixed at the lower right next to the 5-cent JFK memorial stamp, postmarked Boston, Mass., May 29, 1963, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. James Edward Day (1914-1996) served as Kennedy's Postmaster General from 1961-1963. During his tenure, cut the Department's deficit, signed its first labor contract, and established the system of postal zip codes. He returned to private practice in 1963, including many clients whom he advised on how to use the new zip code system to refine their targeting mailings. Tip of upper right blank corner creased. Fine condition.
