A First Day Cover honoring the Centennial of City Mail Delivery, signed by President Kennedy's Postmaster General
First Day Cover signed: "J. Edward Day", in blue ink, 6½x3¾. A First Day Cover honoring the Centennial of City Mail Delivery. Affixed is a 5ยข City Mail Delivery stamp. J. Edward Day (1914-1996) served as Kennedy's Postmaster General from 1961-1963. During his tenure, Day cut the Department's deficit, signed its first labor contract, and established the system of postal zip codes. He returned to private practice in 1963, including many clients whom he advised on how to use the new zip code system to refine their targeting mailings. Light surface creases. Corners lightly worn. Staining on left margin and on verso. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
