6. To Captain Charles Cruihshank, 1s Legion 1s Brigade, Militia, D.C. In
full: "You are hereby informed, that on the sixth instant the President
of the United States appointed you a Captain of Infantry 1s Legion in the 1s
Brigade regiment of Militia Dist of Columbia to rank from 9th April 1825. in the
service of the United States should the Senate, at their next Session, advise
and consent thereto, you will be commissioned accordingly. You will, immediately
on receipt hereof, please to communicate to this Department through the Adj. Gen
Office your acceptance or non-acceptance of said appointment, and, in case of
accepting, you will report yourself to Brigadier General Walter Smith George
Town, D.C." Barbour was Governor of Virginia (1812-1815), U.S. Senator
(1815-1825), J.Q. Adams' Secretary of War (1825-1828) and U.S. Minister to Great
Britain (1828-1829). Fragile and worn. Uniformly tanned. Foxed at edges and in
some areas of text touching the second "b" in Barbour. Shaded edges, nicked at
horizontal folds at top left edge. Lightly creased. Mounting strip on verso at
right blank edge, light show through. Folds do not touch signature. Pencil notes
at top margin (unknown hand).
