The U.S. Representative from Georgia signs his name in black ink
Signature: "James H. Blount/ Macon/ Ga" in black ink. 7¼x2¼ clipping. James H. Blount (1837-1903) was a Georgian politician and U.S. Representative, best known for his staunch opposition to the annexation of Hawaii in 1893 and for his investigation into the alleged American involvement in the islands' political revolution, as well as for his outspokenness on the subject of white supremacy and his opposition to adding new non-white elements to the American population. After studying law, Blount served in the Confederate Army's Second Georgia Battalion, Floyd Rifles, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In 1873 he was elected into the U.S. House of Representatives, a position he held for 10 terms (20 years), most significantly drafting the Blount Report in 1893. The report recommended the rejection of annexation, asserting natives should continue with the Asiatic ways and that the United States should not interfere with the islands' political problems. Irregularly cut. Left edge frayed with small tears. Lightly toned. Corners rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
