Eisenhower's Secretary of Labor responds to an Ohio man expressing gratitude for sending copies of the "Timely Prayer" and thanking him for his kind thoughts.
Typed Letter signed: "James Mitchell" as Secretary of Labor, 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, 1958 October 13. On U.S. Department of Labor, Office of the Secretary letterhead addressed to Mr. M. T. Lizner, Norwood 12, Ohio. In full: "Dear Mr. Lizner: I am indeed grateful to you for sending me copies of the "Timely Prayer". I also want to thank you for your kind thoughts. Sincerely yours," James Paul Mitchell (1900-1964) was Director of Industrial Personnel for the War Department during World War II, continuing to work on Army labor relations through the Korean War. He was Secretary of Labor in the Eisenhower administration (1953-1961), where his emphasis on employment discrimination and the status of migrant workers earned him the nickname "social conscience of the Republican Party." He lost a close race for Governor of New Jersey in 1961. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
