JEAN-LOUIS-MARC ALIBERT - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 07/25/1823 - HFSID 72717

JEAN-LOUIS ALIBERT
He pens this letter in French to fellow scientist Etienne Geoffroy St. Hilaire

Autograph Letter Signed: "Alib". 1p, 6¼x8. July 25, 1825. With integral address leaf addressed by Alibert to Geoffroy St. Hilaire, Paris, France. In French, not translated. Addressed on front to "To Monsieur/ Geoffroy of St. Hilaire/ Member of the Institute/ Au Jardin des Plants/ Paris". The destination of the letter, "Au Jardin des Plants", translates to Garden of Plants. In French, translated in full: "With what happiness I would devour the memory - of Mr. Geoffrey of St. Hilaire on the mutual affection of some animals. That relates directly to my subject; for, I created a chapter - on friendship. It will be nice to pay homage to those who possess the fire in their belly of naturalists. I pray that your dear nephew will borrow this volume on my behalf and I won't keep it more than a few days./ Is it indeed true that swallows help one another in the fashioning of their nest, when it has been harmed by some accident? That is admirable./ Farewell. You are someone who I honor and who I love: that you will be well enough to come lunch with me on Sunday!/ Your perfectly devoted". JEAN-LOUIS ALIBERT (1768-1837) was the physician to Louis XVIII and Charles X and is credited with founding the modern French school of dermatology. Alibert is known for his "family tree" method for classifying skin diseases. He also contributed to the use of vaccinations against smallpox. ETIENNE GEOFFROY ST. HILAIRE (1772-1844) was a French naturalist whose theories on "form and function" and evolution by natural selection influenced the work of future naturalists such as Charles Darwin. Creased. Folds scattered throughout, none of them affecting signature. Address leaf has torn edges from opening seal (remnants present). Otherwise, fine condition.
